Mljet National Park Day
Croatia's greenest island — salt lakes, monastery & wild coast
Mljet is Croatia's greenest island — a long, forested ridge running east-west, with the national park occupying the western third. The park centres on two interconnected salt lakes, Malo and Veliko Jezero, whose water is warm, clear and calm enough to swim in even when the sea outside is rough. At the heart of Veliko Jezero sits a small island with a 12th century Benedictine monastery, still inhabited.
The drive from Dubrovnik heads northwest along the coast to the ferry terminal at Prapratno or Polače, where you cross to the island. Once on Mljet, the national park entrance opens onto paths around the lakes, boat connections to the monastery island, and swimming spots that are busy in July and August and absolutely peaceful in May or September.
Lunch in Pomena or Polače harbour — small, unpretentious restaurants where the fish is fresh and the wine is local. The drive back along the Pelješac coast in the afternoon.
This is the most natural, least touristy day trip from Dubrovnik. If the Old Town's crowds are getting to you, Mljet is the antidote.
